English Curriculum

English Curriculum update – Miss Jubin

Every half-term, all year, groups read a core text in English and, over a period of three weeks, do a range of reading tasks based on the book. They then focus on a couple of grammar learning intentions which they include in a writing outcome such as a letter/diary/narrative etc. Below, I have included images of children’s writing outcomes from last half-term as well as their new core text and reading activities they are currently completing.

Parents/Carers – please take an interest in your children’s learning at home. Do ask them what they have been learning, what books they have been reading and what reading/grammar skills they have been learning about in English. This discussion will enable them to revisit and revise their learning. Also, do take a few minutes everyday to hear your children read and ask them questions about their reading to develop their comprehension skills.

We have noticed that many children are writing without implementing their basic skills such as capital letters, full stops and other punctuation. There is a whole-school focus on this currently to help children improve. When children write at home, do get them to edit their work and include their basic punctuation. If you have any issues regarding your child’s learning, in English or for other subjects, do talk to their class teachers who can give you some more guidance, especially during the next Parent’s Evening Meetings.
