Helping our Multilingual learners thrive
Helping our Multilingual learners thrive
At Kensington, we love seeing our multilingual pupils grow in confidence, make friends, and enjoy their learning. Starting school in a new language can feel like a big challenge, but with the right support, our pupils settle in happily and thrive.
One of the most powerful tools they bring with them is their first language. We encourage children to use it as a bridge to learning, whether it’s discussing ideas with a friend who speaks the same language, using bilingual books, writing in their first language or thinking through a problem before expressing it in English. This not only helps them understand new concepts but also builds pride in their home language and culture.
Teachers also support learning by using visuals, gestures, and adapting learning to make lessons clear. Many children benefit from buddies, who help them with both school routines and making friends. Small-group language sessions provide extra support, helping pupils develop their English while still feeling comfortable using their first language.
Parents play a big role too! We love seeing families share stories, songs, and traditions, helping their children feel at home in school. By valuing every language and culture, we create a warm and welcoming environment where all our pupils can succeed.
