Learning in Year 5
At Kensington, we believe it's essential that children learn how to express their needs and wants, so other people understand them. We teach the skills for this across the whole school, beginning in Nursery. Some children need extra support to make decisions and then inform people about them.
In Twilight room, children have been using computers, as well as group sessions, to develop their language, for example using phrases like "on", "behind", and "in front" to state where things are. Meanwhile, in Starfish room, children have been learning how to ask for things using picture cards and communication boards. As you probably know from your own experience, most children have strong opinions and ideas about many things. Being able to express your point of view clearly, and to disagree with someone respectfully is an important skill for school, home and work. As part of the Communication curriculum, we teach children how to expertly express an opinion, listen to the points of view of others, and disagree with them, without insulting the other person. This helps children to have discussions and debates with others, to be confident in their own opinions, and that they have the right to express them, whilst also respecting others.
