Learning in Year 5
It has been an exciting term for Year 5. The term kicked off with a very exciting visit from writer Jonny Walker, who specialises in mythology. Each class had a 90-minute drama workshop in which they took a whistlestop tour of Greek mythology and the beliefs of the Ancient Greeks. This was a perfect fit not only with English, where they learned about the gods of Ancient Greece and some of the myths of the time, but their learning in culture lessons.
In English, the students read lots of Greek myths and used their learning to create sensational reports and sizzling stories. Meanwhile, in maths the students explored some of the mathematical discoveries made by the Ancient Greeks, before exploring fractions. They explored equivalent fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers, and then moved on to comparing, adding and subtracting them.
During our communication lessons, Year 5 have explored debating, as well as dance as a way of expressing themselves. Fitness sessions have provided the opportunity to develop our running skills and techniques. Some children from Year 5 have been selected to take part in the London mini-marathon on 26th April, whilst others will participate in a celebratory dance at the beginning of the mini-marathon. We wish them all luck.
